The USA, Brazil and the European Union have now all agreed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, using protocols and binding legislation to target 20-33% increases in the use of renewable energy by 2030. Preventing dangerous climate change is now a key priority for most nations.
In 2009, the European Union, one of our priority markets, legislated in its 2020 Climate and Energy Package binding targets, to ensure that consumption of renewable energy sources reaches 27% of its total energy consumption, in stages, from 2020 to 2030.
Rapid Rotation Biomass - The Product
Wood pellets are a sustainable, clean and environmentally friendly fuel. Used for the production of energy as electricity and heat from domestic and industrial closed-system burners. Created by compressing processed wood into uniform sized pellets, formed using the wood’s own naturally occurring glue, lignin, to bind the pellets together. Wood pellets are a low-carbon alternative to more conventional fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are not renewable or sustainable. High density, fast-growing Eucalyptus clones are ‘coppice-harvested’ at year 3 - coppice harvesting carefully cuts a tree down to just above ground level, which allows the tree to re-grow.
GWD Forestry has owned and operated substantial farm areas in Brazil since 2008 and has a hard working team of trusted, local professionals in place. Our experienced Head of Operations (Brazil), Nuno Paris, oversees all of GWD Forestry’s Brazilian Projects and, as always, will utilize his forestry skills and knowledge of the Eucalyptus clone during the Biomass growth cycle and beyond. Locally in Brazil, wood pellets are widely used in households and medium-sized district heating plants, as well as large CHP (combined heat and power) plants. Wood pellets and chips are used by biomass power generators in Säo Paulo; Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. The major pellet demand destinations within the EU are Belgium, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, the UK and Sweden, all net importers of biofuels. GWD Forestry’s Brazil plantations offer the perfect climate, growth conditions and infrastructure for this project.
